Aid workers blogging from the trenches

Eldis points us in the direction of an ever increasing group of AidBloggers. Aid workers, often working in dangerous situations overseas, who blog. These can be fascinating explorations into what goes on “on the ground”, it can also really humanise issues. This blog from the Congo is very interesting, it combines the mundane (which is interesting considering where it takes place!), the bizarre and the tragic to give a fuller picture of what’s happening over there.
The most famous AidBlogger no longer blogs and her actual identity remains a mystery. Sleepless in Sudan was an intimately personal blog that had a lot of visitors and media attention and pioneered the way for many AidBloggers.
I would heartily encourage you to add an AidBlogger to your weekly sites to visit, they can be really inspiring if you hope to work in the field and helps to keep the issues in the front of your mind. They also provide some information that you may have missed in the news, or the traditional media fails to report.
So check ‘em out! AidWorkers Network is a good place to start. Their aggregator is almost unreadable due to bad formatting, but they’ve got links to almost too many blogs run by aidworkers. Think of an area you’re interested and there is sure to be an aid worker blogging from there.
