Victoria’s new water policy - it’s good!

Melbourne’s new 50 year water policy has been getting the thumbs up from leading environmental groups. It seems to be a sustainable approach to Victoria’s water - and doesn’t need a whopping big dam across the Maribyrnong. The policy focuses on water conservation (always good), river health (I like the sound of that) and recycled water for industry (yay!).

The coolest part, or at least the part I found mosy interesting, was the upgrading the water treatment plant at Frankston to provide recycled water to supply power plants rather then fresh, drinking water. This will give domestic users an extra 25% of water to use, giving us more leeway with restrictions - though hopefully the message will be second nature by then so we keep saving it anyway. Of course we may have to face the fact that one day we’ll be drinking recycled water, get over the psychological factor people - all water is recycled!

This next summer looks to be very dry. So it looks like stage two water restrictions may be coming whether we like it or not. Hopefully this new policy will help ease the burden we are putting on the state’s water, and likewise ease the impact of the upcoming water shortage.
