An African telco billionaire has started a prize for good governance in Africa. At the moment when you leave office “Suddenly all the mansions, cars, food, wine is withdrawn. Some find it difficult to rent a house in the capital.“, which can encourage corruption. This new initative by Mo Ibrahim gives good leaders US$5 million over ten years when they leave office plus $200,000 a year for life. An interesting idea, with support from Mandela and Annan, though I’m sure it will reward those good guys out there I’m not sure it’ll have much impact on the really bad ones.
“And the people who are doing badly and are killing their own people or stealing state resources are going to carry on doing that.”
