I think Melbourne’s distribution of fair trade cafes is rather impressive. We’ve got quite a few in the city centre and inner suburbs - Brunswick St, Smith St, a few on Lygon. Then you hit about Box Hill and there’s virtually nothing before Heathmont, which has a cool cafe called Barclays that is one of the largest Victorian sellers of Jasper’s fair trade coffee. Ringwood is pretty empty, then Croydon has at least two guaranteed fair trade shps right on Main St. Next fair trade stop would be Lilydale with Yarra Valley coffee - great people there, very helpful! Now once you head out past Lilydale to Warburton, Woori Yallock way you start to see quite a few more cafes with fair trade.
So it’s a bit pot-shot in some ways, but there’s probably a fair trade cafe within 20 minutes of your house if you live near a Lilydale line train station - the Belgrave line probably has even more. If you’re not sure check the FTA locator that will quickly tell you where your closest fair trade hit is.
An interesting one that I recently came across is COG Bike Cafe in Mount Evelyn.
I’ve drive past COG a few times, and my fiance showed me an advertisement for them and their fair trade coffee, and I am very impressed - can’t wait to get along to them. They are a small little cafe right now, but have area to sit down and fix your bike up. Combining both fair trade coffee and bicycle expertise - it’s seems like a match made in heaven! They are situated right on the Warburton bike trail, so if you’re in the area pop in and let me know what they’re like.
