A Dalhousie University study on ocean species says 2048 is the likely date when the oceans run out. Most fisheries are not only on the edge of collapse but are being rapidly overfished. The problem is that first of all governments haven’t been willing to enact tough legislation and enforcement on seafood industries, and two the international nature of the oceans makes them hard to protect from international poachers.

“This isn’t predicted to happen. This is happening now,” study researcher Nicola Beaumont, PhD, of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, U.K., says in a news release.

Of course it’s not just about us running out of food, the oceans provide waste detoxification and other non-food benefits. It’s not too late to fix things either. Check out SOS Melbourne Central for a sustainable seafood place to eat.
