Amidst the craziness of G20, there is at least one report of police officers going beyond the call of duty. The Age reports of Drasko Boljevic, a man who was not involved with the protests, being picked up by plain clothes policemen, thrown into a van without explanation, had his head sat on, and not being told anything for two hours. He was ultimately released, but his bag was torn up and he says he is now missing some money. I’m still not clear why there was plain clothes police on duty for G20 - that can’t be a good idea with all the rioting going on. Police need to be clearly identifiable, and certainly in this situation Boljevic should have had what was happening explained and his rights told to him.
Also, more negative stuff about G20. International reporters are complaining the the restrictions on the media during the meeting were worse then in China. Once again, The Age reports that the restrictions were too tough and unnecessary. The scariest part of the article is the word from the Treasury representative who said the G20 was never supposed to be accessible to the public. A meeting of some very powerful people, making decisions that effect virtually everyone around the globe and it’s not supposed to be public? What a strange way of running things!
