One Boring Election

The results are in and nothing very exciting seemed to has happened in the Victorian election. Labor won, as everyone knew they would, lost a couple seats. The Liberal’s still aren’t looking too good. Family First got a bit of a boost, doubling their vote. The Greens look like they got some seats, even with their vote down 1%.
There’s not too much to say about this vote. It would have been nicer to see some more ‘protest’ votes against Labor to keep them on edge - especially over environment and transport police (we need more trains not freeways!). I think people were a bit worried that the Libs might actually get some power so they stuck with Labor. I’m disappointed that the major parties got such a big portion of votes, the minor parties is where the real action should be at. If People Power or the Greens had some power the pressure on Labor could mean real change! The best thing about minor parties is that they can afford to be a bit crazy - promising big spending on stuff that needs money. Disabled care, climate change, public transport - they are unfettered by major party “economic rationalism”. We need a bit of generosity in government I think.
I don’t think this election was one on any one issue. I know WorkChoices probably played a big role, as the ALP continually tells us, but I think there were lots of different reasons for the result. One of my friend stuck with “the devil he knows”, I didn’t like the dam policy of the Libs, another friend wanted more spending on nursing homes, etc. The Libs stuck to their party line a little too tightly, not willing to get a bit green and spend some more dollars on the people who need it.
