Awesome new tool out from Google and United States Holocaust Memorial, a Google Earth layer that provides heaps of information and stats on the on-going crisis in Darfur.

Google EarthCrisis in Darfur is the first project of the Museum’s Genocide Prevention Mapping Initiative that will over time include information on potential genocides allowing citizens, governments and institutions to access information on atrocities in their nascent stages and respond.

It’s a great, interactive way to learn more about one of the most troubled spots on the planet. It’s also really easy to use, just download Google Earth, click the “Global Awareness” category under layers and then double-click on “Crisis in Darfur”.

I’ve written previously on Darfur, that information is probably out of date by now, but provides a good background to the conflict. It’s been called genocide, 100,000s of thousands of people are being killed and many more displaced - yet progress has been slow.
