Interesting link from Rodrik to Nathan Nunn’s paper on the long term effect of the slave trade on African nations. Nunn (an economist) compares economic performance in countries with the number of slaves taken from them and finds a “robust negative relationship with the number of slaves exported from each country and subsequent economic performance”. As always, the horrors of colonialism isn’t quite ancient history, it’s been lived in today.
