The Intellectual Property of Magic

After writing an essay on Patents for Property Law last semester I’m even more put off by the current approaches to intellectual property - I think IP has its place, but that place is certainly very limited. With that in mind here’s an interesting paper by Jacob Loshin examining the world of performing magicians. Magic tricks aren’t covered by IP but the magic community itself has developed strong norms to stop people sharing their secrets. He links it back to broader IP theory and how some IP-free spaces are still thriving.
