Following Russia’s moves at the top of the world, the UK has laid claim to more than 1 million sq km of Antarctica. Though deep sea drilling isn’t economically feasible now, the polar regions could be worth a lot of money some day. This is clear defiance of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty which disallows new claims to territory on the continent.
