James5 is a site about stuff that matters. Environmental friendliness, social justice and left-of-center politics is what you can hope to find here. Run by me, Devon Whittle, a 4th year, Christian, Arts/Law student at Melbourne University, born in South Africa (but migrated when 5 years old) and attending Church at EDGE Church. James5 aims to highlight the latest social, environmental and political issues, along with ways you can help make the world a better place.
I’ve been involved in social justicey type stuff for about 4-5 years now, ever since I picked up my first AdBusters and became interested in where my food comes from. I began only eating free-range/organic meat and eggs, and slowly realised that meat wasn’t the only thing wrong with our consumption. Since beginning university I became involved with Hooked, and started advocating for fair trade products at Melbourne Uni (we’ve done pretty well!) and trying to get my church interested in justice-living. Hooked has now grown tremendously, and I’ve got so many social justice contacts and groups swirling around my inbox that there’s always something good to do on a weekend. I thought I’d share some of that love here. If you’re into Facebook you can connect with me on Facebook.
I started James5, inspired by GreenLAGirl, to provide an Australian/Melbourne-based commentary on things green, fair and just. I come across a fair amount of interesting trade/aid/debt/environment stuff in my travellings and this seemed like a good way to catalogue and share it all. I also enjoy sharing my opinion so James5 should contain a healthy dose of opinion as well. Additionally, the calendar will hopefully provide Melbournians with a list of ethical stuff to see and do.
If you’d like to help out, that would be fantastic! You can write articles, submit links, comment or add things to the calender. Just email me and we can go from there.
