Here’s a real interesting read on mobile banking in South Africa and Kenya. Mobile telephone companies and banks are teaming up to provide targeted financial services to the poor. For example, money can be sent via SMS, and cashed out at a mobile operator. This avoids the need for a bank account and in a country where 60% of people don’t use banks this creates whole new opportunities for a vast range of people.

Rwanda
recently released a report saying that France was very much involved in the 1994 genocide, even directly killing some Tutsis. France
denies any involvement, but there have already been calls for French officials to be charged with war crimes.

The BBC
reports on a lack of funding/support for the UN-AU peacekeeping mission in Sudan. Some UNAMID soldiers are using blue plastic bags to indicate they are with the UN due to the lack of supply of blue helmets.
