Rodrik’s
post on sweatshops has some good comments to follow. I like the one by dale in particular: “Its OK to follow our hearts and moral intuitions on these matters. The time has passed when proponents of industrial market societies get a free pass on rationalizing extremes of explotation.” - though I think following our hearts/morals needs to be backed up by hard data showing that we are doing actually helps. IELP and check out the
NYT article that started it.

Evan emailed me
this article in The Age covering the use of child slavery in chocolate. A good reminder of the importance of fair trade chocolate and making sure what we eat is ethical.

Freshcup has an
interesting read about the history and future of fairtrade. It’s a great read to get up to speed on what it’s all about and why it’s a better option.

Wow,
this hotel sounds awesome! One nit-pick with the write up though, “serves only organic, shade grown and
free trade coffees.” (emphasis added). This is the second time this week I’ve found a well respected eco-website using free instead of fair when referring to coffee. An easy mistake to make for sure, but surely an easy one to avoid as well?

Fantastic
news from The Age, commonsense has prevailed and the ACCC has dismissed the spurious claim by right-wing think tank that fairtrade and Oxfam were misleading consumers.
